El Al Israel airlines announced last week that due to high security costs on its Cairo flights, the company was unable to continue to operate the two weekly flights.
The announcement made by El Al CEO Haim Romanonoted that flights would cease on November 15th 2006.
Following the dramatic announcement by El Al, the Ministry of Transport director general Gideon Siterman issued a statement noting he would hold urgent discussions with Raanan Dinur, the director general of the Prime Minister's Office, concerning El Al 's decision to halt flights to Cairo.
Siterman said that this was a unilateral decision, and that he considers the continued operation of the line to be of great importance.
Siterman also said that a letter had been sent to El Al CEO Haim Romano, expressing the Ministry's dissatisfaction of the decision and emphasized that the decision to stop the flights should have been made following consultation with the government.
He added that the ministry expects El Al to reconsider its decision and restore the flights.
El Al operates two weekly flights to Cairo, on Sunday and Thursday. Prior to 2001, the flights were operated on daily basis, however, due to the civil unrest in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip the number of passengers was severely affected which could not justify daily flights.
El Al shares the route with Egypt's Air Sinai which was established in 1982 to fly scheduled services between Egypt and Israel, which for political reasons could not be handled by EgyptAir.
