El Al Israel Airlines Ltd. has announced that from now on passengers wishing to bring bicycles on the airline’s flights will not be charged extra.
In a formal announcement issued last week the company noted it will allow passengers to take their bicycles on flights without having to pay an excess baggage charge.
Until now, passengers had to pay $20 per kilogram – adding up to over $100 each way.
The airline will subsidize the fee.
El Al says that that the decision was made due to the fact that over 1,000 Israelis use their own bicycles to take bicycle trips around the world each year. It hopes that cyclists from around the world will also be encouraged to bring the bikes to Israel.
Cycling is among the world’s fastest-growing sports.
El Al announced it will carry bicycles on board free of charge
