The Palestinian Shippers' Council (PSC) which was established earlier this year to form a national shippers' council that is capable of addressing the urgent needs of Palestinian importers and exporters generated by the protracted conflict, and supporting the PA's reform and long-term trade development efforts asked last week the Israeli National Federation of International Freight Forwarders and Customs Clearing Agents to assist its members overcome present difficulties.
Majdi Haj Khalil, director general of the PSC asked in a letter addressed to the chairman of the Federation that:"Due to the current situation in Gaza and the west bank, we would appreciate if you advice your members on giving the best advice for all Palestinian Importers that are suffering due to the closure of Gaza and part of the West bank. Khalil added "May be in some cases to advice them on un -stuffing containers in order not to incur huge demurrage bill, negotiate on their behalf the best rates for storage …etc."
Khalil also noted that the PSC had agreed with the ports of Haifa and Ashdod that Palestinian importers would be entitled to 6 days free of storage charge rather than the usual 4 days allowed to Israeli importers.
The PSC and the Israeli National Federation of International Freight Forwarders and Customs Clearing Agents have close working relations.
