Spanish customs claimed last week to have intercepted arms shipment from Israel to Nicaragua. The ship's bill of customs noted that the container was carrying air rifles
According to Spanish news services the Spanish customs service uncovered 1,085 guns and pistols in a container making its way from Israel to Nicaragua, during a routine inspection of the container while it was being trans-shipped in the port of Algeciras in southern Spain.
In a separate statement issued by the governor of the southern Andalusia region, Governor Juan Jose Lopez Garzon said customs officers in the port of Algesiras confiscated 400 pistols, 300 rifles and 380 carbines found in a container unloaded from the Maersk Detroit.
The ship's bill of customs noted that the container was carrying air rifles. The firearms were detected thanks to a new container scanner, paid for by Washington, whose use is obligatory on all containers loaded on ships bound for the United States.
The Maersk Detroit, a container ship, had come to Spain from Port Said, Egypt. According to sources in Israel the sale was fully approved by the authorities and declared to the customs prior to loading at the port.
