SIPG Bayport took another step towards becoming a fully green port today. For the first time, a ZIM container ship was connected to a shore-based power supply (Cold Ironing) while docked at the port. This connection saves the ship from using its engines while docked, thus preventing pollution. The technology enabling this connection represents significant progress in the field of sustainability and air pollution reduction in the port industry. Bayport is already considered the greenest port in Israel, with only electric cranes and even electric port trucks (tugs).
The Cold Ironing system is an innovative system that allows ships to receive direct power supply from the dock, instead of operating their engines or internal generators for routine needs such as cooling, lighting, and operating loading and unloading systems. The system allows precise electricity consumption according to the operational needs of the ship, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption.
The use of this system is already common in several ports around the world, and the Mayor of Haifa, Yona Yahav, demanded at the tender stages for the establishment of the port that this system also be installed at Bayport. Many shipping companies - including ZIM - have already prepared in advance for the technological adaptation of their ships, thus enabling the connection. Bayport is currently completing the international installation process under the DNV standard, recognized worldwide in the shipping world, which will enable a similar connection for other ships visiting Bayport.
From SIPG Bayport it was reported: 'This is a move that testifies to Bayport's commitment to lead advanced, innovative, and green port activity. The connection to electricity from the dock is an important milestone in our strategy to preserve environmental quality, reduce air pollution, and reduce costs for our customers. The installation and operation of the shore power system are part of a broader process led by Bayport to make its activity cleaner, smarter, and more efficient - for the benefit of its customers, local residents, and future generations.'
