The Port of Los Angeles handled more than 10.3 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) in 2024, marking an increase of almost 20% compared to 2023 data. This achievement comes as the port celebrates its 25th consecutive year as the busiest container port in the Western Hemisphere.
In December alone, the port handled 921,616 TEU, a figure representing a 24% increase compared to the previous December. While import figures showed a strong growth of 460,915 TEU (an increase of 26%), exports fell by 9%.
Gene Seroka, CEO of the Port of Los Angeles, announced significant infrastructure improvements, including a $73 million rail expansion project. The port is also investing in workforce development, including a new $16 million ILWU-PMA maintenance and repair training center. "Our goal is zero emissions," declared Seroka. "This is about setting a new standard for ports around the world, proving that economic growth and environmental management can go hand in hand."
In addition, the cruising sector experienced significant growth, with the port expected to receive more than 1.5 million passengers in 2025.
