Minister of Transport Shaul Mofaz who gave the opening speech at the "port2port International Logistics & Transportation Conference" held last week said that the port reform policy advocated by the Israeli government was beginning to pay and early signs of true competition can be evidenced.
The event, which was Israel's first International Logistics & Transportation Conference, was opened by the Minister, in the presence of business leaders representing several leading multinational logistic companies such as Kuehne + Nagel, UTi, representatives of leading shipping companies: Maersk, Zim integrated shipping services as well as leading airlines and representatives of the US customs service.
Mofaz added that foreign investment is much needed to the Israeli port industry. He noted that "In the future, Israel will be a gateway or a hub to the Middle East: Ships will unload their cargo at the Haifa and Ashdod ports, and from there they will be transported by a network of fast trains to Jordan and the entire Arab world.”
Mofaz congratulated the Palestinian delegation which participated in the event and noted that he was well aware of the existing difficulties at the border crossings and that his staff were doing their best to improve the situation.
