Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has completed the delivery of the BlueWhale autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to the German Navy. The handover took place at the Eckernförde naval base, attended by senior officials from the German defense establishment and IAI management. This system joins other defense solutions provided by the company to Germany, including the Arrow 3 system, and serves as a central pillar in the German Navy's "Marine 2035 and Beyond" program.

The BlueWhale was developed by IAI’s ELTA Systems division in collaboration with Atlas Elektronik, a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The vessel is designed for covert missions requiring long-endurance sea stays, utilizing an advanced sensor array for acoustic intelligence gathering, mine detection, and underwater target identification. The system enables real-time data transmission via satellite communication when the vessel is near the surface.

The current delivery follows a series of operational trials conducted in the Baltic Sea, aimed at testing the systems' durability under real-world conditions and in dynamic environments. According to IAI CEO Boaz Levy, the system provides a significant technological advantage on the maritime battlefield, enhancing the ability to protect shipping lanes and the lives of combatants.

From an operational perspective, the integration of an autonomous platform with advanced sonar and signal processing systems allows modern navies to expand their range of operations without the need for on-site personnel. Michael Ozegowski, CEO of Atlas Elektronik (TKMS), noted that the collaboration enables the rapid implementation of advanced defense technologies into the German fleet, strengthening operational capabilities against evolving underwater threats.

The delivery of the BlueWhale marks the expanding use of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) in the international maritime arena. For the logistics and maritime security sector, this trend emphasizes the shift toward remote monitoring and data analysis, which is expected to influence the future security of maritime trade routes and strategic offshore infrastructure.
