The Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) informed last week the port of Haifa management that a labor dispute had been declared at the port.
In a statement issued by the port authorities it was noted that if an agreement cannot be reached, a strike will be staged at the port from 29 November 2007.
The authorities added that the dispute will cover four sectors at the port: stevedoring, transport, equipment and clerical workers.
The port of Haifa management also noted in a written statement that the dispute declaration, the disruptions and sanction utterly contravene the Haifa Port workers committee’s commitments to preserve industrial quiet under the ports reform agreement.
The sanctions will severely affect the port’s regular operations, and, most of all, its reputation among its customers. It is expected that should the Labor Federation decides to go ahead with the strike, many shippers will divert cargoes from Haifa to Ashdod.
