Haifa Port Company Ltd announced last week that it had agreed to acquire two new container gantry cranes for €12.5 million.
In a statement issued by the port management, Haifa Port president Amoz Uzani said that the new Panamax type container cranes are being supplied by the German company Kocks Krane.
Uzani added that with the two new cranes he expect container productivity to increase by almost 20%. The two new cranes have the capacity to load and unload 240,000 TEU a year. Both cranes are likely to be installed at Haifa Port in August 2007.
Uzani also noted that the container terminal restructuring would increase the port’s capacity before the Carmel Port became operational. He emphasized that Haifa port is taking the necessary steps “to maximize the port’s cargo handling capacity in order to cope with the increasing competition between the container ports on the Eastern Mediterranean coast.”
