In the presence of Eng. Zvi Zilker Mayor of Ashdod, Yossef Shinin the city's chief rabbi, Haim Shabiv, Trade Union representative, Mrs. Iris Shtark Chairperson of the port , Mr. Shuki Sagis, Director General of the port and families of the murdered workers the memorial ceremony was held at the "Kikar Hashmona" a site specially built in memory of the eight port workers.
The attack was the first time suicide bombers attacked a port in the intifada. It was also the first time that militants from Gaza staged a terrorist attack in Israel. A truck carrying two suicide bombers left the karni border crossing into Israel at about 2 o’clock in the afternoon of March 14 headed for the deepwater port of Ashdod, about 40 kilometers south of Tel Aviv.
By 3:30 pm, the truck had arrived at the port, one of Israel’s busiest. About an hour later, the terrorists detonated their explosive devices, killing 8 port workers and wounding 18.
