Buses serving the Jerusalem area and those serving rural routes will be first to get GPS. The system will be able to make it possible to avoid road hazards, traffic jams or road accidents by rerouting buses
Egged Israel Transport Cooperative Society Ltd. said last week it had begun installing GPS in 3,500 buses at a cost of over US$4 million.
Egged Transportation Cooperative Society is Israel’s largest public transport operator.
the company is one of the largest public transport companies in the world, providing 60% of the State’s public transport services. Egged operates urban and inter-urban bus lines throughout the country. All together, the company operates over 1,000 bus lines with 45,000 daily journeys, in which the buses cover 810,500 km.
In a statement issued by the company's management it was noted that buses serving
the Jerusalem area and those serving rural routes will be first to get GPS.
The statement said that the installation program will take almost eight months to complete. According to Egged the advantage of the GPS system can be used to plan and map bus movements in real-time. The GPS system will also be able to make it possible to avoid road hazards, traffic jams or road accidents by rerouting buses, or increasing the number of buses on a route. The program, according to the company, is expected not only to save fuel and travel time but also significantly reduce air pollution.
