Was ranked the 17th best tourist destination in the world in an annual poll carried out by "Travel + Leisure" magazine
An annual poll carried out by "Travel + Leisure" magazine published under "2009 World’s Best Awards" said that the Israeli Capital, Jerusalem (with a score of 83.23) was ranked the 17th best tourist destination in the world, thus surpassing London, Paris, and Barcelona, three popular international hubs which did not crack the top 20.
Participants in the annual poll ranked the Indian city of Udaipur (scored 87.94) as the most tourist-friendly destination. The second best tourist city chosen was Cape Town, South Africa with a score of 87.69.Bangkok, the Thai capital, finished third in the readers' ranking.
Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat, welcomed the ranking of Jerusalem as one of the best cities in the world for tourists. Barkat added that “the Municipality of Jerusalem is leading efforts to realize the great potential for tourism in the city and to significantly increase the number of tourists in the next decade”.
