The private members bill defines such strikes as “unprotected strikes”. The bill allows the government strikers and replace them with other workers during a strike
Two Israeli Knesset members MK Ronit Tirosh and MK Yoel Hasson received the green light last week from the ministerial committee for legislative affairs, to advance their private members bill restricting the right to strike at the country’s seaports and airports.
The private members bill defines such strikes as “unprotected strikes”, which, if approved, will have a dramatic change on Israel's strikes history allowing the government to sue the strikers and replace them with other workers during a strike.
The preamble to the proposed bill states, “In recent years, strikes have caused, in addition to immense economic damage, real damage to the conduct of government business and dramatic repercussions to the daily lives of the country’s citizens and visitors.”
Both members of Knesset said after the ministerial committee approved the submission that “This bill aims at balancing the unions’ right to strike with the state’s responsibility to preserve, even in cases of a strike, the proper functioning of its systems".
