The ships, of about TEU 4,000 or TEU 4,500, are expected to spend up to six months at anchor, by which time the world trade picture should be clearer
Avi Levy, Chairman of Israeli Sea Officers’ Union, said last week that Zim Integrated Shipping Services has laid up ten containerships in the TEU 4,000 capacity in the Philippines. “There are ten Zim ships laid up in the Philppines. All of them are containerships of the class of about TEU 4,000 or TEU 4,500”.
Following the decision to lay the ships 70 shore-based jobs were to go and an early retirement deal for around two dozen officers was being discussed.
It is understood that Zim has plans to anchor 10 containerships intotal in the Philippine port of Davao. Three of Zim's ships are already laid up in Malalag Bay, near Davao, along with 17 other ships from other companies, and there are no more berths there. The ships are expected to spend up to six months at anchor, by which time the world trade picture should be clearer.
The Philippine port authorities charge $91 per day for small container ships and $104 per day for the huge ships.
