Gad Shefer: shipping companies refrain from calling Israeli ports

Mr. Gad Shefer, the newly elected chairman of the Israeli shipper's council said last week in a press release, that as long as the situation at the ports is unclear, shipping companies were unwilling to call at Israeli ports.
 
"Strike is looming and it is unclear whether the negotiations will reach a satisfactory conclusion." Shefer said.
 
According to Shefer, the status quo in the ports has been preserved in recent months while negotiations on structural change are taking place between the government, the Ports Authority, the workers committees, and the Histadrut.
 
However, should the talks fail, the worst ever strike would close all main Israeli maritime gateways.
 
Shortly after his election to the chair, Shefer sent letters to the Minister of Finance, Minister of Transport, Chairman of the Trade Unions, President of the Manufacturers Association, President of the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce, director general of the Port Authority, ports directors and workers committees at the three ports.
 
In his letter Shefer expressed his concern regarding rumors that the Ministry of Finance was, apparently, interested to have a short strike that would last for a few days in order to reach a satisfactory conclusion.
 
He added that a strike was totally unacceptable and would lead to more losses to trade and industry.
 
Shefer offered to contribute his experience and know-how to mediate between the parties and added that he was willing to devote his time to reach a peaceful and satisfactory conclusion.
