During the seven months period - January to July 2004, a 3% increase was registered in cargo movements at the three main maritime gateways compared to same period in 2003.
Statistics released by the Israeli Ports Authority ( IPA )show that during the above period 21 millions tons of cargo moved through the ports. The container sector registered a 1% fall to TEU 911,000.
The report noted that in July, due to the strike, a drop of 27% in cargo movements was registered, compared to July 2003. During July the ports handled 2.3 millions tons of cargo. The container sector registered a drop of 49% compared to July 2003. total number of TEU for July was 78,000.
Mr. Amos Ron Director General of IPA said that he directed the ports to increase their efforts to overcome the bottlenecks that were created due to the large number of containers being brought in after the longest ever industrial dispute at the ports.
