A cycling enthusiast created a waterproof cardboard bicycle which weighs 9kg, but can carry up to 220kg
An Israeli inventor, an amateur cycling enthusiast, Izhar Gafni, 50, has created a waterproof cardboard bicycle which weighs 9kg, but can carry up to 220kg that he is hoping will revolutionize transportation in developing countries and prove a boon to congestion-plagued cities.
The finished product of which more than 90 per cent is made from layers and layers of card, stacked tightly to make it strong enough to hold a human, costs US$9 to manufacture, and expected to retail for US$20, does not need maintenance or adjustment includes no metal: The tires are made of reconstituted rubber, and the "chain" is actually a car timing belt.
The bicycle is made out of cardboard but is treated with a secret organic concoction that makes it water and fire proof, and is then coated with lacquer paint. The device will have no metal parts, and even the breaks, wheels and pedal will be made from green materials.
Iznar hopes his affordable bike will ease traffic congestion in big cities - and make transport easy and affordable for people living in developing countries in which, according to his plan the bicycles would be given away for free.
