Bank of Israel: Israel’s roads less congested

The Bank of Israel annual survey for 2005 which will be published next week point out that over the last few years Israel’s roads have become less congested
 
The central bank attributes the reduction in overcrowding to the substantial road development investment made in recent years.
 
The Central Bank noted that the congestion level on Israel’s roads is very similar to the average level experienced in Britain. Comparing investment levels in Israel with Britain the Bank noted that investment in roads in Israel in recent years exceeded the level of investment in Britain. The average annual investment in road infrastructure in Britain, including maintenance, totaled 0.6% of GDP. Investment in Israel during the same period, including 2005, averaged 1% of GDP per year.
 
Another new item to be published in the annual survey for 2005 is a road congestion index. For the first time the Bank publishes a road congestion index based on a calculation of distances traveled, and factoring in the various types of vehicles, and the level of disruption they cause on roads.
 
The data collected reveals that motorcycles cause twice the disruption caused by private vehicles while trucks caused disruption that was 2.5 times that of private vehicles.
