The cold spell that settled on Israel in January has had its winners and its losers. Farmers are reporting tens of millions of shekels in damage. The worst damage hit produce intended for export; large quantities will be disqualified for export and sent instead to local markets.
According to report issued by the Agriculture Ministry, 25% of flowers for export were lost. Due to the shortage, flower prices in Europe have soared.
The Agriculture Ministry estimates the damage to farmers at NIS 500 million.
Haim Hadad, head of Israel's Flower Growers' Association, noted that flower prices have increased due to Valentine's Day, marked on Feruary 14.
