Central Bureau of Statistics figures published last week show that as a result of the port strikes and the general strike, imports of goods down-turned sharply from $3.12 billion in August to $2.45 billion in September, a drop of 21.4%.
According to the figures September imports were still 3.6% higher than the $2.36 billion recorded in September 2003.
Imports of goods for the nine months January-September 2004, excluding diamonds, totaled $23.16 billion, compared with $19.97 billion in the same period last year.
