According to sources at the Ministry of Transport, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) decided last week that Israir may operate charter flights to Thailand.
The company, however, has not been granted permission to operate a scheduled service to New York.
According to the sources at the ministry the charter flights to Bangkok will compete directly with El Al's scheduled service to Thailand.
The sources noted that the CAA will find it difficult to approve a scheduled service in direct competition with El Al unless the route meets strict conditions, such as more than 10 million passengers a year.
