Airbus 340-600, which belongs to the long-body type planes, landed on Wednsday in Ben Gurion airport while on a Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Tel Aviv. It is the first time in Ben Gurion’s history that a plane of this size and length is allowed to operate in the airport.

Israel Airports Authority approved the plane’s entrance to Ben Gurion inlight of Lufthansa's request to use the plane for its flights to Israel.

According to the civil flight international organization's regulations it requires a special testing to approve landing, take-off and general matching for the designated airport infrastructure.

Shul Grimberg, manager of Lufthansa Cargo station in Israel, said that Airbus 340 is capable of carrying more than 10% of the volume of a regular plane, and has a better weight carriage capability. Because of its transatlantic destination it can carry 25 tons of cargo per flight. Grimberg said that since it is a morning flight, the plane gets to major hub of Lufthansa in Frankfurt, Germany, a fact which enables it to continue to major destinations around the world on the same day.

Before the confirmation was given, the logistic division of the Israel Airport Authority (IAA) has made an aerial survey which examined the way the airplane will match and influence the airport’s functions, while examining relevant parameters of the plane for the airport’s infrastructure. Runways, parking spots, driving lanes, land gear, refueling, electricity – all were checked according to the plane’s data as it was given to the IAA by Lufthansa and the manufacture. According to the plane’s data, the only parking spot which the plane can have in Terminal 3 is the C6 spot.

The IAA’S CEO, Gabi Ofir, met with ben Gurion’s executives and the operationial vice manager in order to insure the preparation and the approriate tests before the Airbus 340 arrives here, also inpart of the airport’s preparation for the future arrival of the Airbus 380. Ofir also mentioned that inspite of its large size, Airbus 340 is considered to be one of the most advanced and “quiet” airplanes which have inviormental awareness in the open spaces.

Airbus 340-600, which is capable of flying 345 passengers, is the most advanced plane by airbus which is in active service in the aviation world until the future entrance of the hugh airplane Airbus 380 in 2008. according to the custom the Airbus 340 was welcomed by water hoses.
