The declaration came following the demand of El Al’s CEO to cut employee benefits included in the airline's labor contract
El Al employees declared a labor dispute last week. Following the labor dispute announcement, El Al's workers committee leader Yossi Levy warned that a strike looms after the 14 day cooling-off period.
The declaration came following the demand of CEO Haim Romano to cut employee benefits included in the airline's labor contract. The trade union - Histadrut expressed anger that Romano is making the exact same demands that he had earlier withdrawn when he signed the labor contract in November, and implies that he has acted in bad faith.
The Israeli law recognizes that once the Histadrut has announced labor dispute El Al employees can legally launch sanctions after 14 days over cuts to their employee benefits.

In a statement issued by the union it noted that the union had been asking El Al's management to negotiate for months but was ignored.
Union leader made a clear promise to El Al CEO Haim Romano that the union would agree to accept any efficiency steps so long as management listened to its demands. Levy added: "We asked that the salaries of all vice presidents who earn more than NIS 100,000 a month be cut, but Romano refused”.
