A government appointed committee set up by the finance and the transportation ministries, in order to study the implications of opening up the ground handling sector for air-freight, recommends the government to open up the market for competition.
The committee, headed by mr. Ami segal, deputy general director of the customs authority, recommends that the government allows the setting up of private air cargo handling facilities close to the ben gurion airport.
The committee arrived to its far reaching decision after having been convinced that such cargo facilities will not only reduce costs but also improve level of service to the public.
The decision was largely based on the aggregate experience of similar cargo handling facilities abroad and in the israeli maritime sector, where several container freight stations operate in competition to the seaports.
The committee members who consisted of representatives from the customs authority, security agencies , finance ministry & airport authority were in favor of the policy change and recommends that the government should embark upon the necessary actions to change several cargo handling security related decisions.
